01The local market
A Perth enquiry should start with the service and operating model, not one broad “car detailing” promise. A maintenance detail at a customer address, workshop paint correction, ceramic-coating preparation, interior restoration, pre-sale clean and caravan or 4WD service require different facilities, labour and customer expectations.
Mobile enquiries need a suburb inside the operator’s real travel map, permission to use the proposed location, lawful parking, safe space around the vehicle, an appropriate surface and a workable containment or recovery process.
Workshop enquiries need the actual address, vehicle-size limits, hand-over windows, secure storage, preparation space and product-specific curing conditions. Osborne Park, Canning Vale, Malaga and Wangara are useful service-zone examples, but “Perth-wide” should only be advertised when the business can consistently deliver the stated travel and service terms.
Western Australia’s light industry program identifies car washes among the businesses that may be inspected and says light industrial activities can release contaminants through soil, stormwater drains and soak wells.
Its guidance recommends washing vehicles and contaminated parts in dedicated, self-contained wash-down bays or enclosures, with wastewater recycled or sent through an authorised disposal system. Those points matter to ad creative as much as they do to operations. A photograph of a driveway, kerbside wash or open workshop apron can imply a process that the operator cannot use at every address.
Claims about mobile convenience, water recovery or a workshop setup should match the process the business can demonstrate rather than treating the nearest drain or soak well as a disposal option. Water Corporation treats a car detailer’s vehicle or machinery wash-down area separately from a public car wash. Its guidance says businesses intending to install or use a wash-down area connected to sewer must apply for approval to discharge trade waste, and the wastewater must meet its acceptance criteria and relevant wash-down-area drawing.
Water Corporation also says trade-waste approval can include pre-treatment arrangements or discharge limitations. A sewer connection, workshop lease, existing drain or previous tenant’s paperwork is therefore not enough evidence for an advertising claim. The operator should confirm the current approval, address, activities, fixtures, plumbing and conditions before saying the site has an approved wash bay.
02The campaign setup
Mobile work needs an address check of its own. The Department of Water and Environmental Regulation says pollutants can reach the environment through soil, stormwater drains and soak wells, while City of Belmont guidance gives a local example: trade wastewater from washing vehicles or equipment must not enter the environment through a stormwater drain, an area that drains there or bare ground, and a wash-down facility needs City approval.
That City advice is not a blanket rule for every Perth local government area, but it shows why one metropolitan audience cannot answer the site question.
The lead form can collect the suburb, who controls the property, surface, slope, nearby pits or gutters, water and power access, parking limits and the operator’s planned containment or recovery method. The business, utility, property controller and relevant local authority still decide whether the proposed site and discharge path are acceptable. Chemical safety should be part of the service brief rather than hidden behind a “professional products” label.
WorkSafe WA says a hazardous-chemicals register records hazardous chemicals used, handled or stored at a workplace and must include the current safety data sheet for each listed chemical. It must be up to date and readily accessible to workers and anyone likely to be affected. The detailer needs to check the actual classification and current SDS for coatings, solvents, polishes, stain treatments, wheel cleaners and other products.
Storage, decanting, ventilation, ignition control, spill response, exposure controls and protective equipment then follow the product, quantity and task. Advertising should not replace that assessment with unsupported chemical-free, non-toxic, child-safe, pet-safe or allergy-safe claims. Photos help triage paint and interior condition, but they cannot establish paint depth, clear-coat condition, hidden contamination, prior repairs or a safe correction limit.
WA Consumer Protection’s vehicle repair guidance says quotes should outline the work and cost and that original and additional work should be authorised. Detailing is not automatically mechanical repair, yet the quoting discipline is useful: identify the inspected scope, included preparation, price assumptions, exclusions and approval process before extra work begins.
Dent, panel, spray-painting, corrosion, electrical, sensor or mechanical work should not be folded into “paint correction” unless the business genuinely provides it with the required competence and authority.
03Claims and hand-off
Ceramic-coating and package claims need equally clear boundaries. Suitability and durability can depend on paint condition, contamination, prior coatings or repairs, preparation, product, application conditions, curing, vehicle use, washing and maintenance. The ACCC says advertised claims about a service’s benefits, qualities and performance must be accurate, truthful and based on reasonable grounds, and qualifications cannot contradict the overall message.
A coating term or warranty needs the actual product and written conditions. A “from” price needs the vehicle class, preparation, coated surfaces, correction allowance, exclusions, GST, travel and inspection assumptions. Avoid permanent protection, scratch-proof paint, no water spots, guaranteed gloss, removal of every defect or a promised resale value.
Environmental wording also needs specific evidence. The ACCC says environmental claims should represent a genuine impact, be backed by evidence and disclose important limitations. “Eco friendly”, “green”, “sustainable” or “water saving” can create a broader impression than one biodegradable ingredient, low-VOC product, recyclable container, rainwater tank or rinseless process actually supports.
None of those product or process facts alone decides where wash water, road grime, compound, oil, solids or coating residue may go. Campaigns should state the precise benefit that can be substantiated and show the complete operating process, including any relevant recovery, recycling or disposal conditions. The lead form should end with an accurate hand-off.
Collect the vehicle type, make, model, size, condition, previous protection, requested service, desired result, current photos, suburb, mobile or workshop preference, proposed work-site details and timing. Explain whether the team will review photos, call, inspect the vehicle, assess a mobile address or prepare a quote.
A form submission is not a paint diagnosis, trade-waste approval, final process, fixed quote, coating warranty decision or confirmed booking. That boundary gives a Perth detailer a useful sales conversation without using the ad to make technical, environmental or scheduling decisions that still need checking.
