01The local market
Brisbane intent is not one generic “car detail” request. A mobile maintenance detail, workshop correction, coating package, interior restoration, pre-sale clean and caravan or 4WD service need different facilities, labour, preparation and customer expectations. Mobile enquiries need a suburb inside the operator’s real travel map, lawful parking, permission to use the proposed area, space around the vehicle, a suitable surface, a weather plan and a workable method for containing or recovering wastewater.
Workshop enquiries need the actual drop-off address, hand-over windows, vehicle-size limits, secure storage, lighting, preparation space and any product-specific curing conditions. Chermside, Carindale, Indooroopilly and Eight Mile Plains also sit in different travel corridors. “Brisbane-wide” should describe capacity the business can consistently deliver, not a broad audience setting chosen before travel and service economics are checked.
Brisbane City Council’s environmental guide for motor vehicle smash repair contains a specific vehicle-detailing section. It says detailing and washing should be carried out on a roofed concrete floor that is sealed and bunded so pollutants cannot enter stormwater directly or leak to another area that drains there. The guide also identifies cutting and polishing compound as material that should be kept from escaping the detailing bay, and discusses water recycling, rainwater, waterless methods and lower-VOC product choices as ways to reduce impact.
That is practical Council guidance for automotive premises, not automatic approval for a particular workshop or a promise that one product label solves every environmental issue. A campaign should describe only the wash bay, recovery, recycling and product process the detailer can demonstrate at the advertised site. Sewer discharge is a separate approval path.
Urban Utilities defines trade waste as waterborne waste from commercial, manufacturing, trade or industrial premises and says the property owner must have a Trade Waste Approval before a business discharges trade waste into its sewers. Its approval page says the conditions can cover approved flow rates and discharge times, pre-treatment, monitoring, metering, maintenance, charges and site-specific requirements. The approval is issued to the property owner, generally for a specified period, and is not transferable to another person or company.
A floor drain, workshop lease, pressure cleaner or previous tenant’s paperwork therefore does not prove that a Brisbane detailing discharge is approved. The property, activities, proposed wastewater, plumbing, pre-treatment and current approval need to be checked with the responsible authority before the campaign claims a compliant wash setup. Stormwater cannot be treated as the alternative drain.
Council’s waterways advice tells residents to keep car-wash suds out of stormwater drains, while its commercial automotive guide describes roofed, sealed and bunded detailing areas. A residential tip does not establish permission for a mobile detailing business to wash on any lawn, driveway, street, basement or workplace car park.
For a mobile enquiry, the form can collect who controls the site, surface and slope, nearby pits and gutters, available space, parking limits, water and power access and whether the operator’s containment or recovery process can be used.
02The campaign setup
It should not ask the customer to decide whether discharge is lawful. “We come to you” should mean the business assesses suitable addresses inside a genuine service zone, not that every address is acceptable. Greater Brisbane also needs an honest boundary.
Queensland’s South East Queensland infrastructure plan lists Brisbane, Ipswich, Logan, Moreton Bay and Redland as separate local government areas within the wider region. An operator may genuinely cover several of them, but a Brisbane page should not quietly turn into proof of approval, travel capacity or identical environmental settings across all five.
The campaign can branch by suburb and postcode, apply different travel or minimum-job rules where they are real and confirm the relevant council, utility, parking and property conditions for the actual address.
That is more useful than adding Logan, Redlands, Moreton Bay and Ipswich to ad copy solely to enlarge the map. Product safety belongs in the operating brief. Workplace Health and Safety Queensland says a workplace using, handling or storing hazardous chemicals needs a register identifying those chemicals with the current safety data sheet for each, accessible to workers and others likely to be affected.
It also explains that chemicals not classified as hazardous, and specified exclusions, do not belong in that register. A detailer therefore needs to check each coating, solvent, polish, stain treatment, tyre dressing or cleaner rather than assuming every product is hazardous or that every “professional” product is harmless. Storage, decanting, ventilation, ignition sources, spill response, exposure controls and protective equipment should follow the current SDS, classification, quantity and task.
Advertising should not replace that assessment with unsupported non-toxic, chemical-free, child-safe, pet-safe or allergy-safe wording. Paint correction needs a clear boundary between visual triage and inspection. Photos can show swirls, oxidation, contamination or an area of concern, but they do not establish paint depth, clear-coat condition, earlier repairs or how much correction is safe.
Queensland Office of Fair Trading guidance for vehicle repairs and services distinguishes an estimate from a more specific written quote, says a vehicle may need to be inspected for a written quote and advises that additional work should be authorised.
03Claims and hand-off
A detailing offer can adopt that discipline without pretending every polish is a repair job: state the inspected scope, included preparation, price assumptions and approval process for extra work. Dent, panel, spray-painting, corrosion, sensor, trim or mechanical work should not be folded into “paint correction” when it sits outside the business’s actual service and competence.
Ceramic-coating and package claims need the same care. Suitability and durability can depend on paint condition, contamination, previous repairs or coatings, preparation, the selected product, application environment, curing, vehicle use, washing and maintenance. The ACCC says claims about price, benefits, qualities and performance must be accurate, truthful and based on reasonable grounds, and fine print cannot contradict the advertisement’s overall message.
A stated term or warranty therefore needs the actual product and written conditions, while a “from” price needs the vehicle class, preparation, coated surfaces, exclusions, GST, travel and inspection assumptions. The ad should not promise permanent protection, scratch-proof paint, no water spotting, removal of every defect, an exact gloss result or guaranteed resale value. Environmental language needs its own evidence.
The ACCC warns that broad terms such as “green”, “environmentally friendly”, “eco friendly” and “sustainable” can create a misleading impression unless the real benefit, limitations and conditions are clear.
A waterless process, low-VOC choice, rainwater use, recyclable container or biodegradable ingredient can be described precisely when substantiated, but none of those claims by itself decides where road grime, compound, oil, solids or coating residue may go. The creative, headline, imagery and qualification should represent the complete process rather than borrowing a green label from one product.
Genuine before-and-after content can then show the real starting condition, work performed and result without implying that lighting, editing, paint colour or one selected vehicle proves the outcome for every enquiry. The lead form should finish with an accurate next step. Collect the vehicle type, make, model, size, condition, previous protection, requested service, desired result, current photos, suburb, mobile or workshop preference, site details and timing.
Explain whether the team will call, review photos, inspect the vehicle, check a mobile site or prepare a quote. A form submission is not a paint diagnosis, wastewater approval, final process, fixed quote, product warranty decision or confirmed booking. That hand-off gives the detailer useful information without shifting inspection or approval decisions into the advertising.
